Building a background task is easy. Building one that survives failures, shuts down cleanly, controls overload, avoids duplicate work, and keeps running reliably in production is much harder.
Background Processing with .NET 10 gives you a clear, step-by-step path from simple Worker Service fundamentals to dependable production background systems. You do not need prior experience with IHostedService, BackgroundService, Channels, durable messaging, backpressure, idempotency, or OpenTelemetry. A basic working knowledge of C# and async/await is enough.
Using one practical project—DocFlow, a document-processing Worker Service—you will build confidence one layer at a time. Each chapter introduces a problem, explains why it matters, and shows how to solve it with focused examples. Mistakes, failed shutdowns, duplicate work, slow dependencies, and growing queues become useful engineering signals that help you improve your system.
