English Description
This book consists of three research essays that explore the often‑overlooked resistance of ordinary Chinese people during the Cultural Revolution. Although the Cultural Revolution is widely regarded as a national catastrophe, many individuals demonstrated remarkable courage in opposing political persecution and authoritarian power.
The first essay examines twenty‑four individuals who were killed during the Cultural Revolution and later officially recognized by the government as revolutionary martyrs. Drawing on a wide range of historical sources, the author reconstructs their lives, actions, and the circumstances of their deaths.
The second essay provides a statistical and analytical study of those who resisted the political forces of Lin Biao and the "Gang of Four." Their opposition represents an important dimension of popular resistance during the Cultural Revolution and offers insight into the broader social dynamics of the period.
The third essay compiles records from local gazetteers across China, presenting firsthand accounts of grassroots resistance. All descriptions are taken directly from local historical documents, preserving the original voices of those who stood against political oppression.
Together, these essays shed light on the moral courage and human dignity displayed by individuals during one of the most turbulent chapters in modern Chinese history.
