Paperback. What happens when the teacher becomes the student?Veteran educator Joy E. Young found herself back in the student seat-uncertain, overwhelmed, and struggling to learn a new language. She returned to the classroom hoping to better understand how her multilingual students learned English. Instead, she discovered that learning involved far more than vocabulary and grammar. It became a deeply personal journey that transformed the way she understood teaching, learning, and the students she served.Through honest stories, educational research, and practical classroom insights, Back in the Student Seat invites educators to experience learning from the student's perspective. Readers will explore topics such as multilingual learning, cognitive overload, classroom belonging, motivation, and the hidden challenges students often face-discovering not only how students learn but also what it truly feels like to be one.More than a collection of teaching strategies, Back in the Student Seat challenges educators to see students through new eyes and rediscover the empathy that transforms great teaching.Whether you teach multilingual learners, elementary, middle, or high school students; prepare future teachers; or support educators as an instructional coach or school leader, the invitation is the same: return to the student seat and rethink teaching through the eyes of a student. Each chapter concludes with reflection and discussion questions, making it an ideal resource for individual reflection, professional learning communities, teacher preparation programs, instructional coaching, book studies, and professional development. What happens when the teacher becomes the student? An experienced educator's journey as an adult language learner transforms the way we understand teaching, learning, and the student experience. She thought she was learning Spanish. Instead, she rediscovered what it feels like to be a student—and that changed the way she understood every learner she taught.
When veteran educator Joy E. Young moved to Mexico, learning Spanish was about survival. She simply wanted to navigate daily life in a new country.
Years later, she returned to the classroom in Costa Rica with a new question:
How does someone really learn another language?
She expected to discover more about language acquisition.
Instead, she discovered something far more personal.
The answers she found led to one final question—one that would take her back into the student seat in Spain and eventually inspire this book:
What else could I learn about my students by becoming one again?
Through honest storytelling, educational research, and practical reflection, Back in the Student Seat invites educators to journey alongside the author as ordinary language classes reveal extraordinary truths about learning, perseverance, belonging, and the invisible experiences students carry into the classroom every day.
This isn't another book of teaching techniques.
It's an invitation to pause, sit back down in the student seat, and experience learning from the inside once more.
Because when teachers remember what it feels like to struggle, to question themselves, to celebrate small victories, and to long for someone who truly understands...
they begin seeing every student differently.
Whether you teach multilingual learners, kindergarteners, high school students, or future teachers—or serve as an instructional coach, administrator, or school leader—you'll come away with fresh perspective, renewed empathy, and practical insights that will stay with you long after you've turned the final page.
Because some of the most important lessons about teaching can only be learned from the student seat.
