Paperback. The bus factor is a count. The number of people who would need to become unavailable before a function, a department, or an entire business stops working. A bus factor of one means a single person is the only thing standing between normal operations and a serious problem. In most small and mid-sized businesses, that person is either a long-tenured employee nobody has ever cross-trained, a technical contractor who set something up years ago and never fully handed it over, or the owner.Usually the owner. This book is about finding those single points of failure before they find you.Inside, you will learn how to run a bus factor audit on your own business, covering the five categories where single-person dependencies most often hide: knowledge, relationships, access, skill, and decisions. You will learn the specific patterns that create bus factor problems in growing businesses, why they are almost impossible to see from the inside, and what a practical fix actually looks like for each category. You will also get a straight look at your own role. Most owners discover, when they actually count, that more decisions route through them than they realized, that more relationships are held exclusively by them than they should be, and that the team has been quietly working around a bus factor problem the owner was the last to notice. The book covers documentation, cross-training, delegation, departing employees, vendor dependencies, sudden unavailability, and the connection between bus factor and business valuation. It closes with a 30-day action plan that turns the findings from the audit into a specific sequence of steps.IT Support 101 Inc. is an independent advisory firm working exclusively with business owners and executive teams on the technology and operational decisions they cannot afford to get wrong. - Book 2 of 30: Everything A CEO Needs To Know About I.T.
On a Monday morning in October, a CEO I'll call Margaret came back to her office after two weeks away. Her desk was stacked with paper. Her inbox had eleven hundred unread messages. Her assistant had a list of forty-three decisions waiting on her return.
Margaret had been running the business for twelve years. She'd taken vacations before. What was different this time was the thought that hit her sometime during the third hour of the catch-up meeting. The business she'd built could not run without her.
Margaret had a bus factor of one.
This is a plain-language book for CEOs, founders, and business owners who have built something that works, and who have started to suspect it works in a way more fragile than it appears. Nineteen chapters covering the whole picture, from how to find your single points of failure to what a practical fix looks like for each one. No jargon. No management theory.
No software to buy. No fixed prices in the book. Current details at itsupport101.com.
Inside:
What the bus factor actually is, in plain language, and why the number matters more than most operational metrics you already track.
Why most small and mid-sized businesses have a bus factor of one on several important functions, and why the reason is structural rather than a failure of anyone in particular.
The bus factor audit, a practical afternoon-long exercise that lists the top ten functions the business depends on and identifies, honestly, how many people could carry each one.
The five categories of single-point risk. People. Knowledge. Access. Relationships. And you.
The practical levers, in the order to reach for them: documentation, cross-training, delegation, the departing employee playbook, and the vendors and contractors you also depend on.
What happens when the owner is suddenly unavailable, and what a well-run business has in place before it happens.
How reducing your bus factor becomes one of the highest-leverage investments you can make in the eventual sale price of the business.
The insurance side of key-person risk: what key person life insurance, disability coverage, and buy-sell agreement funding actually do, and how to size each.
The specific dynamics of bus factor in a family business, including the founder pattern, the successor pattern, and the outside advisor pattern.
The business-shape bus factor: customer concentration, supplier concentration, and channel concentration, and the diagnostic that catches all three.
The extension of the frame to contract workers and fractional executives, the specific class of people who do critical work for you without being of your business.
A thirty-day action plan, a set of specific moves you can start on Monday morning.
A field guide of eight printable worksheets at the back: self-assessment, audit, access register, documentation template, cross-training plan, departing employee playbook, ninety-day resilience plan, and annual review.
Every worksheet is also available as a free printable PDF at itsupport101.com/fieldguides. A QR code in the book links straight to the page, so a fresh clean copy of any worksheet is one scan away.
