Sixty-eight snapshot photographs represent the corral of rodeo cowboys and cowgirls in the 1950's and 1960s, mostly in Gerry, New York at the Gerry Fire Department's Annual Rodeo. While most images were made in Gerry, NY other places pictured include: Union City, Indiana; Miami, Fl; and several in Niagara Falls at the Oppenheim Zoo (now closed). Bucking broncs, stock horses, and docile ponies are featured along with trained Buffalo and Ox bull fighting. One image displays a dog pulling a child in a cart. Other ranch dogs are featured throughout. Several photos highlight men getting thrown off of their horse, or men facing down a bull in risky entertainment. Near the end of the album is a photo of two men talking beside a S.P.C.A. (Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) truck. This image perhaps foreshadows the closing the Oppenheim Zoo and the widespread controversy regarding animal endangerment in these practices. One outlying image of a covered bridge in Vermont is dated 1937/1937. These black and white photographs which range in size from 3 1/2" X 3 1/2" to 4"x6" are held to black album pages by clear corner tabs or double sided adhesive tape. Writing on verso provides date, location, and other context, occasionally naming the person photographed and the type of horse. In total there are 24 leaves/48 pages. This album is well maintained, in excellent condition.…
