Black leather with gilt school coat of arms to fr. double gilt border-lines to both covers and gilt deckled edges, , gilt dec. paneled sp. with gilt-on-red title label, clean and attractive but marred by chipping and rubbing to top sp. and sl. to bottom, bottom outer corners rubbed. Main problem though is nearly detached front cover. All edges marbled. Marbled end-papers. f/piece + xvi + 186, 130 text figs. plus chapter head-pieces; no obvious internal faults bar a touch of tanning to blank end fly leaves and inner un-marbled sides of end-papers. No indication this is a prize-binding though certainly looks like it. Fr. cover coat of arms is on 'Cheltenham JuvenileProperietary School'. Preface dated 1874, so this likely to be a re-issue. Lubbock becoming very well known and popular by this date and the Nature Series was very prestigious. 12 cm x 18 cm.
