You are no longer audited by people. You are audited by machines.
Deep inside U.S. Customs and Border Protection, automated targeting systems score your shipments around the clock — your classifications, your valuations, your suppliers, your entire tier-N supply chain. They are looking for anomalies. In fiscal year 2025 alone, CBP recovered $235.5 million and opened more than 53,000 liquidated damages cases. The era of trusting that your broker "caught everything" is over.
Border Certainty is a strategic field guide for the executives who carry that risk — VPs of Supply Chain, Directors of Trade, CFOs, and General Counsel. In a single sitting, it shows how CBP's algorithms actually flag your organization, what a detention or retroactive-duty demand truly costs, and how to build the internal controls that turn compliance from a liability into a source of return.
This is not fear-mongering, and it is not a legal treatise. It is a clear-eyed operator's briefing from someone who has spent 25 years in customs and trade compliance.
Inside the book:
- How CBP's risk-based targeting engine selects you — and how to screen your own data first
- The valuation and AD/CVD traps that quietly scale into eight-figure liability
- Forced-labor (UFLPA) risk — and why 93.5% of stopped shipments never clear
- The reasonable-care defense that survives a penalty case
- Two worked case studies drawn from real patterns of failure
- An 8-question Border Certainty Scorecard you can run in a Monday staff meeting
- A "first 90 days" on-ramp — the cheapest, highest-leverage moves to make before you build anything
Grounded in current enforcement data and real customs cases, written in plain language for the people who sign the entries and answer to the board, Border Certainty replaces vague dread with a concrete plan.
The border has gone algorithmic. Your defense should too.
