First edition. 4to. 9 x 11 inches. xxvi + 155 + [1] pp. Bound in original brown decorated cloth, gilt sundial blocked in centre, with bevelled boards. Extremities worn but otherwise good condition. Ink inscription on front pastedown. Illustrated by frontispiece and five plates at the end and decorated by title page and head and tailpiece vignettes and initials. Three hundred and seventy-seven sundials from Britain and Europe are listed in alphabetical order of motto (the majority in Latin) and at the end is a section, Further notes on remarkable sundials and place indexes on sundials with and without mottoes. Margaret Gatty (1809-73) was best known as a writer of children's books and natural history but had a lifelong private interest in mottoes and emblems.
