This collector’s treasure trove of golfing memories represents a highly pleasurable stroll through the history of the sport. It captures the real essence of golf, while focusing on the issues that have influenced the game in the past alongside those that are helping to shape its future.
The authors begin at the beginning – in 15th century Scotland – and chart the rise of a sport which, from humble origins, has become a billion-dollar industry. They draw not only on their own redoubtable experiences and observations, but also a selection of timeless articles from golf’s literary elite – Henry Longhurst and Peter Dobereiner among them – to provide a text which will be a delight to every fan of the game.
Hugely informative chapters which recount the development of golfing equipment and golf course architecture are followed by a tongue-in-cheek look at some of the lighter moments in the sport’s history, before the authors move on to explore the magic of the Majors; cup competitions such as the celebrated Ryder Cup; the US and European tours; and snapshots of 20 of the world’s most memorable courses.
A separate chapter features portraits of some of the greatest players in the world, arranged by era – among them Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, and Seve Ballesteros – reflecting on defining moments in their careers and the very special character of the game.
Illustrative material is provided courtesy of world-renowned artist, Harold Riley. Over 150 of his black-and-white sketches intertwine with the text to bring the history of the game to life, while the colour plate sections feature exclusive course paintings and player portraits. Also provided are a number of colour images from the exclusive Lawrence Levy collection – one of the most revered photographic collections in world golf.
The history of golf has often been chronicled in book form, but never like this. With its precious blend of artistic styles and the enthusiasm and knowledge of the authors which pervades the text, Beyond the Fairways is a must for any discerning fan and player of the game.
