Item description from seller

SHEPARDSON BOOKSTALL, 20+ YEARS OF EXCELLENCE. VERY SCARCE, ONE OF A KIND SURVIVING BOOK WITH DJ. BOOK covered in green LEATHERETTE; spine #4 (1925-29); small gold torchbearer on front (1925-29); green topstain; Bernhard Endpapers; lower front right corner is bent, but otherwise a bright, clean copy. FRAGILE DJ is protected by mylar cover; has many chips, tears, side seam worn thru and is missing front inside flap but enough is left to figure out that this is an AUTUMN 1928 edition with 150 titles listed; Per Scot Kamins it has Apuleuis' The Golden Ass, but does not have Dostoyevsky's Brothers Karamazov. I photocopied and matched it up with another front flap from a 1928 book in order to show this (SEE SCANS). SUMMARY: One day young widow Victoria meets an old friend of her husband's in the park. He suggests that Victoria become his kept mistress and then she can stop working, regain her health, and be set financially. She feels this - or marriage - is the only way for a woman to get ahead, financially, in life. But she soon sees that this arrangement is just another type of job and her life is no bed of roses: He has involved her in prostitution. THIS WAS A BEST SELLER IN IT'S DAY AND MADE W.L. GEORGE RICH. AS IS.
