Item description from seller

Original printed green wrappers, stitched. 19, [1 blank] pp. Very Good. After the Civil War, Washington College would be renamed Washington & Lee. Its 1852 graduates numbered six, all Virginians from Amherst, Rockbridge, Lexington, and Bedford. Junkin [1790-1868] defends higher education from criticism that it produces "immoral, dissipated and worthless" adults. The cause of this, he solemnly proclaims, is "Premature Entrance." Bad parenting has produced a lazy, unpleasant youth. It's not Junkin's fault. A Pennsylvania Presbyterian minister, Junkin became the first president of Washington College in 1848. The web site Presbyteriansof thePast has a long biography of him. One of his daughters became the wife of Stonewall Jackson; she died in childbirth in 1854. With the advent of Civil War, Junkin opposed secession and returned to Pennsylvania. Haynes 9858.
