Item description from seller

Leiden, E.J. Brill, 1971. XVIII,278 pp. [29] plts (numbered I - XIX) with b./w. ills (line drawings & photographs). Orig. hardcover (blindstamped blue cloth with gilt lettering), d./j. 4to. - Dust jacket with light shelfwear.A scholarly French-language book containing an in-depth study of the Shasu (or Shosou), a group of nomadic tribes that lived in the region of the Levant (modern-day Jordan, Israel, and the Sinai) in antiquity. Giveon analyzes how these nomads were described in hieroglyphic texts and documents from Ancient Egypt. The work is particularly well-known among historians and theologians because one of the Egyptian texts Giveon discusses refers to "Yahweh in the land of the Shasu." This is regarded by many scholars as one of the oldest known mentions of the name of the God of Israel.
