"I drink an orange juice while looking at the champagne, then I drink the champagne so it'll stop staring at me."

Since the loss of their baby—whose belongings Chris packed away at the very back of a closet in his relentless drive to move on—Elle has been fading away, hunting for inspiration at the bottom of her vodka bottles. She spends her days locked in her studio, slowly transforming their apartment into a permanent courtroom. Cornered by paranoia and terrified of abandonment, she pushes away the man she loves with a desperate cruelty.

A transgressive dual-perspective novel, Elle is an asymmetrical plunge into the ravages of addiction, the things left unsaid, and the collapse of a couple in the face of loss.
