Print on Demand. This book concentrates on developing and describing a performance evaluation method for Roadway Departure Warning Systems (RDWSs). The evaluation process is based upon a technological system termed the Baseline Measurement System (BMS), developed to serve as the benchmark against which new RDWSs are to be compared. The BMS uses data from sensors on the vehicle combined with video and other inputs to evaluate performance in the field. RDWSs play an increasingly important role in present and future vehicle technology, and this book provides a benchmark for evaluating their performance, enabling improvements in safety. The book serves as a grounding for both researchers and practitioners in the field of roadway safety. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

Several types of evaluations can be conducted to obtain an overall performance evaluation of a roadway departure warning system. A preliminary evaluation is usually conducted prior to a field operational test in order to determine the safety and reliability of the warning system under a controlled set of circumstances. The results of a preliminary evaluation are used to design and implement a full - scale field operational test involving a large number of drivers operating under normal everyday driving conditions. A scenario for a preliminary evaluation of a roadway departure warning system is described in this section. This scenario drove the design and implementation of a performance measurement system called the baseline measurement system (bms). The following list highlights some general attributes of a preliminary evaluation.
Ability to generate a large number of roadway departure incidents.
Ability to record the response of the warning system to each incident.
Ability to establish a baseline, that is, the correct operation expected from the warning system, and to compare the output of the warning system against the baseline in a quantitative manner.
Ability to perform evaluations on real roads not just on a closed test tracks.
Ability to perform evaluations in wide variety of environmental conditions: lighting, weather, etc.
Ability to perform the evaluations in a cost - effective manner.
