Are you looking for a complete, engineering-focused guide to modern automotive powertrain systems?
Whether you're an automotive engineer, engineering student, researcher, or technical professional, staying current with today's rapidly evolving powertrain technologies is more challenging than ever. Internal combustion engines continue to push the limits of efficiency, electric propulsion is transforming vehicle performance, hybrid systems are reshaping mobility, and software has become just as critical as mechanical design.
This book brings all of these technologies together in one comprehensive reference.
Spanning 22 professionally structured chapters, it delivers an in-depth exploration of the principles, technologies, and engineering practices behind today's most advanced powertrain systems. Designed for both learning and professional reference, it combines theoretical foundations with practical engineering insight.
Inside this book, you'll explore:
- Internal combustion engine architecture, thermodynamics, combustion, and performance optimization.
- Fuel delivery systems, turbocharging, supercharging, and advanced engine management strategies.
- Manual, automatic, dual-clutch, automated manual, and continuously variable transmission technologies.
- Driveline engineering, differentials, torque vectoring, and all-wheel-drive systems.
- Hybrid electric, plug-in hybrid, battery electric, and range-extended powertrain architectures.
- Hydrogen fuel cell systems and the latest developments in alternative propulsion technologies.
- Thermal management, emissions control, noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH) engineering.
- Artificial intelligence, machine learning, digital twins, and software-defined powertrain development.
- Motorsport engineering innovations and their transition into commercial vehicle production.
- Emerging technologies, including solid-state batteries, 800-volt electrical architectures, next-generation electric drives, and the future of sustainable mobility.
Go Beyond Surface-Level Learning
Unlike books that focus on a single technology or provide only introductory coverage, this guide examines the engineering principles, control strategies, calibration techniques, simulation methods, testing procedures, and regulatory requirements that define real-world powertrain development.
Every topic is presented with clarity, technical depth, and practical relevance, making it equally valuable for classroom study, research, and professional engineering practice.
Who Should Read This Book?
This reference is ideal for automotive engineers, mechanical engineers, powertrain specialists, graduate and undergraduate engineering students, researchers, educators, and technically minded professionals seeking a deeper understanding of modern vehicle propulsion systems.
Built for Learning and Long-Term Reference
Each chapter is carefully organized for both sequential study and quick consultation, allowing you to use the book as a learning resource or an everyday engineering reference. In addition, five comprehensive appendices provide essential unit conversions, engineering abbreviations, emissions and regulatory reference tables, diagnostic resources, and key component specifications for practical use.
Whether you're designing next-generation propulsion systems, preparing for advanced engineering studies, or expanding your expertise in automotive technology, this is the definitive powertrain engineering reference you'll return to again and again.
