7.5 x 5", plain cream stationery. Fold creases, light toning and spotting, remnants of mounting along the left side else good. Ink name at the very bottom looks like "Mrs. Paschall?", Cass' handwriting is always difficult to read. He had been recently appointed the 22nd Secretary of State by new President James Buchanan. The Secretary's tenure was brief, he resigned on December 14, 1860 because he disagreed with some of the President's lack of action in protecting the government's interests in the South and choosing not to mobilize federal troops to prevent the Southern states from seceding.
