Manning served briefly in Alabama's House of Representatives but was too radical on race, labor and other issues to survive in Alabama politics. Manning moved North but appears to have never found much of a niche in Northern politics or government. We believe that the recipient of this note was Dr. Alfred P. Russell, an African American dentist who practiced in Boston (Roxbury) and whose archive at Boston University includes correspondence with Manning. In any event, Manning was surely too radical for Harding to have any interest in helping.

Right of cancellation
