2 1/2 pages on a single sheet of lined paper which has been folded to form four pages. 21cm. Addressed to F. H. Stow. Handwriting rather faint; most of the Postscript is unreadably faint. Stillman has apparently been asked in a letter from Stow whether he is a copperhead. His response: "My Dear Sir, I am a Democrat and thank god I think more of my country than I do of a negro. Party names are of small value but this country should be took care of first & the Slave afterwards. in other words, take care of the country & the country will take care of the Slave. a good white man is now worth only $300.00, and a negro is worth $900.00. So if we lose 3 white men and gain by means one negro, we still have the advantage as we get the wool." He then goes on to confirm a business transaction in friendly terms and says to send a letter to him at Blue Point, Suffolk County, NY (the earternmost county on Long Island). The letter ends with a Postscript asking whether Stow had served in the Army of the Potomac and been in the "7 Day Fight" and gotten wounded. The rest of the postscript is just too faint for us to decipher.
