2 Volumes. 8vo. pp. xxiv, [2], 382; ix, [3], 434. with half-titles. 11 plates & 5 maps & plans (1 folding). index. modern half calf (several small library stamps). Second American Edition (first: 1902). Smith saw active service in South America, where he distinguished himself at the Battle of Montevideo in 1807, the Peninsular Wars, the end of the War of 1812, where he witnessed the burning of Washington in 1814, the Battle of Waterloo, the Cape of Good Hope, where he commanded a force in the Sixth Xhosa War of 1834-36, India where he distinguished himself in the Gwalior campaign of 1843 and in the First Anglo-Sikh War in 1845-46. In 1847 was back in South Africa as Governor of Cape Colony.
