About this Item
Statistical information on the Pastoral, Agricultural, Horticultural, and Mining industries of the Colonies. First edition, xvi+499pp. Portrait frontispiece, folding map of Australasia. Original green textured cloth, gilt titling to the front board and the spine. A little rubbing and wear to spine extremities, frontispiece tissue guard foxed, internally tight, bright and clean. Overall, this copy is in very good condition. This book has an appendix containing the complete Queensland Handbook and extensive extracts from the Handbooks of the other Australian colonies, other notes, and a brief life of the author, along with a few advertising pages. Not a particularly common title but with a wealth of descriptive detail about the settlements, colonisation and development of Australasia, and of the places he visited en route. He was a shopkeeper in Bangor North Wales who had lived in Melbourne and Geelong from 1852-1866, but returned to the U.K. This trip was a health voyage, to revisit family and see the state he had left behind rather reluctantly. He seems to have no interest in these lands, or their people, before the arrival of the European. But he has a nice writing style and is very readable, making this a fascinating glimpse of the world 120 years ago . Seller Inventory # 12410
