About this Item
Edith Van Dyne was of course a pen name of L. Frank Baum, author of "The Wizard of Oz" et sequelae. All 10 of the "Aunt Jane's Nieces" titles (through "In the Red Cross," 1915) listed to verso of half-title (as well as to jacket rear panel), here, so this (being the eighth in the series) is NOT a 1913 first printing. Ads to rear list both Van Dyne's "Flying Girl" (1911) and "Flying Girl and Her Chum" (1912) as well as her/his "The Daring Twins" (1911) and "Phoebe Daring" (1912.) As neither of those "starter sets" developed into a longer series, this isn't very useful in establishing a publication date, though this volume can't be any later than 1918, as publisher "Reilly & Britton" became "Reilly & Lee" by 1919. Book itself is "very-good-minus," with some fading and 1/4-inch (6.5 mm.) of fraying at bottom corner of front board. Uncommon in original jacket, though this jacket is "fair only," with considerable chipping to corners and a 1 X 4-1/2 inch (2.5 X 11.5 cm.) dampstain along fold at lower right of the front panel. Century-old jacket also shows some (clear) tape support to verso. Oval color jacket art repeats the vignette of the three nieces holding the baby from front board. Black-and-white frontispiece on coated stock; no other internals. In this installment, the nieces accompany Uncle John as he conveys a trained nurse assigned to care for a sick baby at the relatives' California ranch. Needless to say, shenanigans ensue. 276 pp., here reduced from $425. Seller Inventory # 010836
