"Attempts to Design an Artificial Heart- Lung Apparatus for the Human Adult" is a pioneering medical and technical study focused on the early development of the heart-lung machine. Authored by C. P. Dubbelman, this work provides a detailed examination of the experimental and theoretical challenges involved in creating a device capable of temporarily assuming the functions of the human heart and lungs. At a time when cardiac surgery was in its infancy, this book explores various designs and mechanical principles essential for the advancement of cardiovascular medicine.

The author meticulously analyzes the physiological requirements for artificial circulation and oxygenation in adults, drawing from extensive scientific research, laboratory experiments, and early prototypes. By addressing the complexities of blood flow, pressure, and gas exchange outside the human body, the work lays the groundwork for future life-support technologies. This book is of significant value to historians of medicine, biomedical engineers, and cardiologists interested in the origins of extracorporeal circulation. It documents a crucial moment in the history of medical innovation and highlights the intellectual and technical foundations upon which modern open-heart surgery was built.
