A rare misbound first edition. This was purchased together with a number of other correctly bound first editions at Hatchards in Piccadilly, London. When you open the book, the half-title & title pages are missing, as are the dedication page & the Jane Austen quotation page. The first page is actually numbered 345! The pages then run properly to p. 371 with the Acknowledgement page following. Then come pages 25 to 371. It is likely that a few copies slipped through the net at the printers, Clays of St Ives. and were probably returned and pulped after being reported by Hatchards, who would have been likely to discover the fault. This copy has been in storage since 2001 and is now offered for sale for the first time as a very quirky, unusual "variant" binding of a modern classic. Seller Inventory # 3053
