Folio, hardback. Complete and collated with 36 colour plates, depicting an array of skin diseases for research and medical purposes. This collection was compiled by Louis Adolphus Duhring, identified on the title page as Professor of Skin Diseases in the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania; Physician to the Dispensary for Skin Diseases, Philadelphia, etc. Also on the title page is an inscription that denotes the book as a 'Gift to St. Luke's Hospital from Free Public Library, New Bedford, Massachusetts [stamped]'. In addition to the Atlas of Skin Diseases, Duhring was renowned for authoring A Practical Treatise on Diseases of the Skin', along with his occupancy of various medical posts subsequent to the publication of this work. Contains a loose-sheet comprising a letter addressed from B. A. & C. W. M. Pratt, Antiquarian and scarce medical and scientific books, to Dr. E. L. Dubois, in which The Atlas is recommended in accordance with the recipient's medical interests. The letter is dated 5/8/75. Duhring's preface identifies the Atlas as 'an urgent need in American Medical Literature', before boasting of its usefulness in 'contain[ing] representations of all those diseases which the practitioner is liable to encounter'. The diseases are ordered, according to Duhring, in the order at which sufficient information became available 'without reference to their similarity in nature'. Each disease is displayed with a chromolithographed plate alongside a flyleaf containing the relevant medical explanation. The plates are each accorded a letter, from A to JJ, in correspondence with the contents page at the beginning of the Atlas. Item remains in original cloth but with replacement spine. Pages are crisp and clear with minimal signs of foxing. Cover is worn, rubbed and slightly scuffed at the edges, yet still boasts very good condition for an item of its age. As mentioned, also includes writing and library stamp on the title page where the book is inscribed to St. Luke's Hospital. Seller Inventory # 036285
