This 6.5 x 9.5, xxiii, 677 page book is a beautiful book and was highly respected at the time of publication. This copy is in near fine condition with the bright red cloth still clean and bright. The paper decoration is still complete and clean. The lettering on the spine is bright and complete but the gilt design on the front cover is slightly worn but still highly visible. The interior of the book is bright and clean with the wonderful illustrations by the author vivid in color and surely illustrative of the topic of the book. There is some slight browning of the edges of the pages but really the book remains in beautiful condition. The book is a first edition as the publication date on the title page indicates. The dust jacket is of heavy paper and is really double in size of the visible wrapper. When removed from the book, the jacked can be unfolded and a wonderful map locating the date and important events in the history of the arts is illustrated by the author on the inside of the jacket. The fold of this jacket has separated over the years and the fold has split but the two ends hold the dust jacket intact. The coloring of the illustrations of this book are truly noteworthy and the information and organization of the text by the author reflect a lifetime of interest and learning about the art of the world. Although the condition and desire for this book suggests a higher price, we wish to offer it at a lower cost and offer it as an honest bargain to today's collector. 677 pages.
