This book presents selected proceedings from the International Conference on Artificial Intelligence for Resilient Infrastructure and Sustainable Building Materials (AIRISE 2025) and addresses the urgent need for resilient infrastructure. Current challenges such as resource scarcity and colossal carbon footprint demand innovative solutions in design and construction. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a promising tool which can process large datasets, predict outcomes, and optimize solutions, enhancing infrastructure resilience. It aids in identification, predictive modelling, forecasting, and real-time monitoring, providing essential insights for damage detection, pattern recognition, and predictive maintenance. Developing sustainable construction materials in civil engineering is crucial to meet the demand for high-performance structures. Research in this area focuses on AI applications, such as artificial neural networks (ANNs) for concrete evaluation, deep learning models, and life cycle assessment (LCA) for a circular economy. AI-driven innovation in smart cities, metaheuristic techniques, and soft computing is increasingly essential for material testing, characterization, and waste utilization. Hence, this book volume explores the challenges of resilient infrastructure, examines AI's potential solutions, and explores real-world AI applications in design and construction.

Sanjay Kumar Shukla is a world-renowned expert in Civil (Geotechnical) Engineering. He serves as the Founding Editor-in-Chief of International Journal of Geosynthetics and Ground Engineering and is the Founding Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Engineering Research Group Leader at Edith Cowan University, Perth, Australia. His eminence extends to his Distinguished Professorship of Civil Engineering at ten renowned universities across India and the USA, including Delhi Technological University, Delhi, Indian Institute of Technology Madras, Chennai, and Southern Illinois University, Carbondale. He is a registered Chartered Professional Engineer in Civil and Geotechnical Engineering with Engineers Australia, holds the designation of Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Engineer in Civil Engineering, and is recognized as an International Professional Engineer in Civil Engineering by the International Engineering Association. Shukla serves on the editorial boards of several international journals. He is a distinguished fellow of American Society of Civil Engineers and Engineers Australia, a life fellow of Institution of Engineers (India) and Indian Geotechnical Society, and a member of several other professional organisations. With an extensive career spanning over 28 years, he has excelled in teaching, research, consultancy, administration, and professional engagement. Renowned for his prolific contributions, Shukla has authored over 320 technical articles, including more than 210 scholarly journal publications. An accomplished author/editor of 27 books, encompassing 7 textbooks and 25 book chapters, his impact extends across academia and industry. Shukla's generalised analytical expressions for seismic active thrust (2013) and passive resistance (2015) are integral to global engineering practices for retaining structures. Additionally, his wraparound reinforcement technique, developed during 2007-2008, stands as a recognized sustainable ground improvement method. Further solidifying his influence, Shukla's seven research mantras, unveiled in 2022, are shaping a sustainable research ethos worldwide. Shukla is among the world’s top 2% of scientists as per Elsevier's October 2023 announcement. Recognized with prestigious accolades, such as the 2021 ECU Aspire Award from Business Events Perth, Australia, and the most prestigious 2018 IGS Award from the International Geosynthetics Society (IGS) in the USA, he is lauded for his outstanding contributions to development and use of geosynthetics.
Bhavna Tripathi has a rich and versatile experience of over 24 years in industry, teaching, consultancy, and research. She works on circular economy in the construction industry, sustainable construction materials, concrete durability, construction and demolition waste, biochar binder, calcined clay binders, and road safety. Tripathi is serving as a Professor of Civil Engineering and Director of the School of Civil, Biotechnology and Chemical Engineering at Manipal University Jaipur, India. She shifted to academics after gaining industrial exposure for nearly ten years while working as Deputy General Manager at the Consulting Group of Engineers Ltd., Jaipur, India and as a freelance consultant for consultancy projects in the area of geotechnical investigations, concrete mix designs, road traffic management, and road safety. With over fourteen years of teaching and research experience, she has accomplished administrative responsibilities in different capacities as Head of Department, Deputy Director (Academics), and Coordinator, B. Tech first year. Tripathi is actively contributing to professional societies, state, and national committees. She is a member of the subcommittee on Campus Facilities and Accommodation Services, SSD 04:3, Bureau of Indian Standards; Treasurer, Indian Concrete Institute – Rajasthan State Centre (ICI-RSC); and member of the Road Safety Committee constituted by the Commissioner of Police Jaipur. Formerly, she served as Treasurer ICI-JAIC from December 2018 to October 2021; Executive Committee member ICI-RSC from July 2015 to December 2018; and member of Road Safety Forum, Transport Department Jaipur from 2008 to 2010. She has also served as a member of the Women Cell at MNIT Jaipur and Vivekananda Institute of Technology – East, Jaipur. She is a life member of the Indian Roads Congress, Indian Concrete Institute, and a Fellow member of the Institution of Engineers, India. As a researcher, she has completed many funded research projects in the area of the durability of concrete containing fine recycled concrete aggregates, artificial fine aggregates, and metallurgical slag as aggregate in concrete. Her innovative work on preparing artificial fine aggregates using waste marble powder and jarosite has been conferred with two patents, one by IP India and another by IP Australia and one design certificate by IP India. Additionally, she has developed a novel concrete mixing method for the effective use of fine recycled concrete aggregates, which is under examination by IP India. She has research collaborations with renowned international universities such as Czech Technical University in Prague, Lund University in Sweden, and KU Leuven in Belgium. She has many publications, both in SCI/SCOPUS indexed journals and international conferences and has edited proceedings of several international conferences. Additionally, she has established Rajasthan’s first Technology Development & Training Centre at Manipal University Jaipur, funded by DST Rajasthan. She has been awarded “Outstanding Concrete Technologist -2022’ by the Indian Concrete Institute.
M Z Naser is a professional engineer and an assistant professor at the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering and Earth Sciences at Clemson University and a faculty member of the AI Research Institute for Science and Engineering (AIRISE).
