Octavo. [iv prelims] 45 pages. 1 page of pie charts within the text. Preface by B. H. Flowers, Chairman of the Science Research Council. Commissioned by the SRC, Professor Lighthill's General Survey on the state of British research into Artificial Intelligence was published here, along with alternative points of view from Professor N. S. Sutherland, Dr R. M. Needham, Professor H. C. Longuet-Higgins and Professor D. Michie. Lighthill's gloomy conclusions prompted the British government to cut funding for AI research in most universities, contributing to a bleak future for the field and years of playing catch-up. Good. Page edges tanned, dull and a little foxed. Cover has some obvious wear to its edges, spine and corners.
