Synopsis
Despite the Western diet high in meat and dairy products, much of the rest of the world has traditionally followed a primarily or entirely vegetarian diet. Tragically, there has been a dramatic transition in the latter as world meat production has increased about 10 times the world population growth rate in just a few decades. I have witnessed the transition to a diet high in animal products in places as beautiful as Micronesia and sub-Saharan Africa, where diseases such as diabetes and heart disease have just begun to rear their ugly heads. This grave trend also multiplies the devastating consequences for the environment worldwide and for the countless billions of animals killed each year for food-10 billion land animals and 10 billion sea animals in the United States alone. Many of us wonder what steps we can take to make a difference in the world. Here, the answer is simple. Following a vegan diet is the first and foremost step to improve the condition of the environment, human health, and the lives of animals. Around the World Vegan Style tells you how and why. The journey to worldwide taste delights starts here! Michael Klaper, M.D. Author: Vegan Nutrition: Pure and Simple Nancy Robinson's cookbook could not come at a better time. The whole world is beginning to realize that animal agriculture-a major source of water pollution and deforestation-is one of the biggest culprits in global warming. The 2007 United Nations report shows that farmed animals are a top contributor to today's serious environmental problems, including greenhouse gases. The global increase in meat consumption also causes rates of obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and other diet-related illnesses to soar. If we're going to reverse the damage we've done to our health and the environment, we have to begin now. Around the World Vegan Style is a step in that direction. Patrice Green, M.D., J.D. Assistant Professor, University of Maryland School of Medicine Faculty Member, Union Memorial Hospital Internal Medicine Fellow, American College of Legal Medicine There is just food and the land to grow that food. If we can all just realize this simple fact for one moment, and stop fighting over the land that holds the roots that support the tree that bears the fruit that feeds the child, then maybe, just maybe...peace. Around the World Vegan Style is more than a cookbook. Nancy Robinson shares how the vegan lifestyle embraces all facets of just food for all life. About the Author
From teaching to animal rights, nutrition, and the environment, Nancy Robinson packs her evolutionary rungs into this international vegan cookbook. Quite obvious is her love of creating vegan meals, no doubt her penchant for cooking from family and relatives whose names pop up here and there. Her curiosity is contagious in this travel log to distant lands, and back again to the Americas from where we needn't stray at all. All cultures are here, with recipes aplenty for any occasion, from gracious folks. Nancy's home and travel route in the Far East years ago, and her affinity for the East's practical spiritual enlightenment comes full circle as Asian friends lend technical expertise to this written practice of nonviolence. It was friends in the Washington, DC, area who pushed her early on to a cookbook toward realizing peace on our beloved Earth, fragile from our abuse. Medical professionals, educators, environmentalists, clergy, students, homemakers, blue collar, white collar, no collar, all ages are in here. You're in here too. Just open your mind and heart. Nancy states emphatically that peace begins in the kitchen. From this room lives are lost or saved, sick or well, spiritual or void. It is this room that sets the tone for our daily journeys. The most obvious way to show gratitude for our food, our environment, and the other animals with whom we share this short life is to consume plant foods only. You'll become a child again, wonder at countless plants you've never eaten, awe at taste you hadn't imagined, and feel peace that no one was caused to suffer, no life taken. The peaceful palate carries over to your clothing, cosmetics, every facet of life, and you regain what you lost back when. Remember? Nancy holds a B.Ed. degree from Appalachian State University in North Carolina, and a Masters in Journalism from the University of Maryland. She has another book churning in her head. Not a cookbook. For sure, a trek back to Eden.
