- Modern Military and War History
The book presents a concrete, moment‑by‑moment view of life away from the battlefield glamour. It blends observation, humor, and reflection as the narrator moves from Virginia to Mississippi and back, sharing encounters with civilians, fellow soldiers, and the ever‑present toll of war. The writing grounds readers in place—the towns, rivers, roads, and fortifications that shape each day’s routine—while offering personal glimpses of resilience, fear, and camaraderie.
- Vivid scenes of camp life, marches, and the rhythm of supply and duty.
- Observations of towns and people encountered along the way, with plainspoken humor and sympathy.
- Reactions to wartime events, leadership decisions, and the changing mood of the army.
- Personal reflections on health, family, and the pull to stay with the regiment through harsh conditions.
Ideal for readers of Civil War memoirs and history, this edition provides an intimate window into a soldier’s world during a pivotal era.

Review
"One Michigan farm boy, who wrote [during the Civil War], I don t no wat is a going on, and proved his point repeatedly, eventually attracted a modern scholar willing to explain wat to posterity. Books of routine and redundant soldier letters form a thicket that conceals those of value. One truly remarkable and incisive soldier s account, privately published in a small edition in 1906, has become a neglected classic."John Y. Simon, from the Foreword"
