The catalog presents a range of Hansen's paintings and etchings, capturing the essence of early 20th-century maritime life along the California coast. Armin Hansen (1886-1957) was a prominent American painter and printmaker known for his powerful depictions of maritime life along the California coast. Born in San Francisco, Hansen studied at the California School of Design and later in Germany at the Royal Academy in Stuttgart. He traveled extensively in Europe, especially in the fishing communities of Norway, which deeply influenced his work. After returning to the U.S., he settled in Monterey, California, where he became a central figure in the regional art scene and a founding member of the Carmel Art Association. [From publisher] At heart a storyteller, Hansen sought subjects that were broadly consequential, depicting scenes, characters, and activities specific to the Monterey Bay region but that conveyed universal themes of physical labor, hardship, danger, bravery, and loss. He rendered these scenes in oil, on the etching plate, and in watercolor, charcoal, and pastel. Celebrated especially as an etcher, Hansen earned a reputation as one of America's finest practitioners of the medium, which on a national level surpassed his renown as one of California's preeminent painters.
