About this Item
8vo, pp [4], 378, 381- 382, [102, table of logerithms], pages misnumbered by complete, bound in contemporary sheep, worn and chipped to leather at fore edges, neatly rebacked spine with raised bands and brown label, internally lightly browned and with a few minor ink spots, but a sound copy, ELEVENTH EDITION; basically a soundly restored copy of a scarce and much used mathematical text book of the mid 18th Century. Pennsylvania State Uni chose this eleventh edition to display in their 'Mathematical Treature' article online, with the following useful information: ' a comprehensive 18th century arithmetic text intended for commercial training. covers topics such as percentage, commissions, monetary exchange, arithmetic and geometric progressions, and the use of logarithms. Although Humphrey Ditton, a respected mathematician of the time, provided a Preface for the work, little is known about the author, John Hill, other than that he described himself as a Gentleman . Other existing mathematics texts of this same period bear the authorship of a John Hill, Accountant. Such an occupation would seem likely for the author of this Arithmetick.'
