Print on Demand. This book tells the history of a single white ash tree which grew for 118 years, reaching a diameter of thirty inches. Each annual growth ring in the tree's trunk is a record of changes in its environment and provides a glimpse into the broader natural and human history of the region where it grew. Expanding and contracting rings show the wet and dry years, insect infestations, forest fires, and other local events that affected the tree's growth. By cross -referencing these rings with historical records, the author reconstructs the tree's story and offers insights into the human history of the region where it grew. The tree's life spanned the expansion of a growing nation and the author shows how its rings reflect this human history, recording not only the felling of surrounding trees, but also the impact of industry, and farming. The book shows that the life of a single tree can be a record of the broader events that shape national history. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…
