From rural ireland, 'The land of duel', Hamilton was moved to issue his reflections on duelling, condemning the practice and seeking its abolition. However, realizing the futility of this, he endeavoured to regulate it, lobbying government and the military to adopt and propagate his 'Royal Code', 60 commandments to minimize the number and severity of duels.
