Add to basketApproach to Geometry (1960) by J Hislop Publisher: Robert Gibson and Sons ISBN: None Condition: Good Geometry is one of those subjects that sounds perfectly innocent until somebody hands you a compass, a protractor and a problem involving a train, three triangles and a circle that somehow knows more than you do. Published in 1960, Approach to Geometry comes from a glorious educational era when mathematics textbooks were written with a calm confidence that suggested every child in Britain would eventually become either an engineer, a surveyor or the sort of person who enjoyed measuring things for recreation. J Hislop?s mission is straightforward enough. Take a bewildering collection of lines, angles, circles and polygons and convince the reader that there is, in fact, a logical system behind all of them. It is an ambitious undertaking. Generations of pupils have stared at geometric diagrams with the expression of someone being shown an ancient treasure map written entirely in code. What makes books like this fascinating today is their wonderfully no-nonsense approach. There are no cartoon mascots, no QR codes, no interactive online resources and certainly no promises that mathematics will be "fun". Instead, there are diagrams, explanations and the quiet assumption that if you apply yourself, eventually the mysteries of Euclid will surrender. Our copy remains in Good condition , having successfully survived more than sixty years of educational reform, calculator invasions, metric conversions and the gradual replacement of blackboards with smart screens. The pages remain perfectly capable of explaining why one angle equals another, even if the reasoning occasionally feels like the mathematical equivalent of a Victorian detective novel. As a period piece, it offers a charming glimpse into mid-century classrooms where rulers were made of wood, teachers wielded chalk with military precision and homework was expected to be completed without consulting an online video featuring an enthusiastic man called Steve. Whether you?re a collector of vintage textbooks, a lover of mathematical history, or simply curious about how geometry was taught when Elvis was topping the charts and the Space Race was just beginning, this is an engaging relic from an age when education was refreshingly direct. A handsome survivor from the era when mathematics was less about colourful graphics and more about persuading triangles to reveal their secrets through sheer persistence.
