"An Approach to Social Medicine" explores the intersection of medical science and social welfare, emphasizing the necessity of understanding the individual within their broader environmental and social context. Written during a formative period in public health, Francis Lee Dunham provides a comprehensive framework for addressing the biological, psychological, and social factors that influence human health.

The work advocates for a systematic methodology to improve community well-being, moving beyond traditional clinical practice to include preventive measures and social interventions. By analyzing the relationship between social conditions and physical ailments, the book seeks to establish a more holistic approach to medical practice. It remains a significant historical text for those interested in the evolution of social work, psychiatry, and the foundations of modern public health.

Through its detailed examination of social hygiene and individual adjustment, "An Approach to Social Medicine" serves as a foundational study on how societal structures impact the health and vitality of the population.
