Something hides, screaming, in the mountains.
What's it trying to tell you?
A couple driving on a dirt road encounter a sheep-like monster.
A miner walking home from a late shift sees a white devil, swings his lunchbox at it and hits nothing.
Folks see a winged thing for thirteen months until a bridge collapses into the Ohio River, killing forty-six people.
Appalachian monsters are witnesses.
The Sheepsquatch, the Mothman, the Flatwoods Monster, the Wampus Cat, the Not Deer, the Woodbooger, and all the rest show up where the mines close, the water turns orange, and the pills arrive. They're the way a place says something is wrong loudly enough that everybody can hear it.
Comic artist and illustrator Alan O.W. Barnes has spent fifteen years listening to strangers whisper about things in the woods. In Appalachian Cryptids, he follows ten of the region's most infamous creatures back to the places that made them, with his own illustrations lighting the trail. Part folklore, part history, part love song to a struggling place, this monster book is for anyone who has felt watched and suspected they deserved it.
Welcome to the geography of fear. Let's go hunting!
