About this Item

Pp. 6 p.l., [ii]-xiii, [1]-504, [16] index, Lacks errata leaf - which is "frequently missing" (Gaskell p. 30). Contemporary full calf, later rebacked in roan, gilt spine. Binding a little worn at extremities, joints flaking slightly, light foxing to front endpaper, title, and dedication leaf, old ink signature on title, small unobtrusive bookplate on pastedown, otherwise very nice clean copy. The First Baskerville Edition of Barclay’s classic exposition of Quaker doctrine. First published in Latin at Amsterdam in 1676, and later translated into English by the author in 1678, Barclay’s "Apology" provides an eloquent defence of the principal Quaker tenet of ‘Inner Light’ against the sufficiency of external authorities, including the Bible. Strongly opposed to the extreme views of Calvinism, it "breathes a large tolerance, and is still perhaps the most important manifesto of the Quaker Society. [and] one of the most impressive theological writings of the century." [ E. B. 11th ed.]. Size: Large Quarto. Bookseller Inventory # 21661
