Two works in one vol. First work: viii, 144pp., 8vo. [Second work:] [4], 76; [6], 47, [1]; 32, 17-113, [1]pp., 8vo. With the work s original title-leaf "Dissertations on Theatrical Subjects, . by Mr. Cibber" dated 1756 bound after the first p. 76 and the final leaf containing an advertisement for Cibber s "Cephalic Snuff" with errata on the verso; a contemporary binder s blank leaf between the two works inscribed "Eliz. Debonnaire." Nicely bound together in mid-nineteenth-century half calf, spine gilt; a bookplate removed from the front pastedown. One of two editions of the first work; in this one p.16 begins: "ther s own son" and has pp. iv and 126-127 correctly numbered. Cibber was both a rake and something of a buffoon. Pope, who of course made Cibber s father, Colley Cibber, King of the Dunces in the revised Dunciad, described Theophilus (in both earlier and later versions) as . . . that youth who takes the foremost place, And thrusts his person full into your face. With all thy Father s virtues blessed, be born! And a new Cibber shall the stage adorn. In the poem One Thousand Seven Hundred and Thirty Eight, Pope is even more explicit: . . . shall the Dignity of Vice be lost? Ye Gods! shall Cibber s Son, without rebuke Swear like a Lord? or Rich out-whore a Duke.…
