Contemporary full calf with gilt-decorated spine. 8vo. xx, 581pp. Translated from the Latin into French by Jean-Nicolas Corvisart with the Latin text on each facing page. First French edition. The author, Maximilian Stoll (1742-1788) was an Austrian physician and member of the "Old Vienna" school of medicine. Stoll is remembered for his epidemiological and systematic approach to medicine. He stressed the importance of knowing the clinical details of a patient's history, and installed a practice of keeping daily progress records of patients. He is also credited with providing the first description of gall bladder cancer. A good copy in a handsome period binding with some scuffing to the cover edges and sides of the spine. The front cover hinge is worn near the top but still quite secure. The text is good with some scattered foxing and a few folded corners. A few pages are spotted in the margin.
