Luzern, Kunstmuseum, July 5 - November 2, 2025.English Text.Milano, 2025; paperback, pp. 336, col. ill., cm 24x28. With Hans Arp, Georges Braque, Alexander Calder, Paul Cézanne, Giorgio de Chirico, André Derain, Hans Erni, Max Ernst, Luis Fernández, Alberto Giacometti, Julio González, Juan Gris, Jean Hélion, Barbara Hepworth, Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee, Fernand Léger, Joan Miró, Piet Mondrian, Ben Nicholson, Amédée Ozenfant, Wolfgang Paalen, Pablo Picasso, Sophie Taeuber-ArpIn 1935, in the newly opened Kunstmuseum Luzern, an exhibition of superlatives was shown that included works by Miró, Taeuber-Arp, Picasso, Braque, Giacometti, Calder and others. While at the same time in National Socialist Germany, art by Wassily Kandinsky, Paul Klee and Piet Mondrian was being defamed as "degenerate", in 1935 the Kunstmuseum Luzern was showing works by precisely these modernist artists. The works came to the museum fresh from the artists' studios. Today, they hang in the world's most important collections.Reconstructing an exhibition that was of enormous interest for the history of our institution, also offers the possibility of reporting on Lucerne in the context of the 1930s. Incipient modernism, resentment against the avant-garde, fascism and communism make up the historical backdrop to that legendary 1935 exhibition entitled These, Antithese, Synthese. The exhibition Kandinsky, Picasso, Miró et al. zurück in Luzern (back in Lucerne) communicates the intellectual, political and cultural upheavals of the inter-war years. At the same time the exhibition presents an overwhelming sensual art spectacle.…

These, Antithese, Synthese – reconstructed presents, for the first time since the legendary exhibition of 1935, all the works that were shown in the Kunstmuseum Luzern against the backdrop of an increasingly totalitarian Europe. The fantastic project aimed to define a new, abstract, non-elitist art that was for everyone.
In 1935, most of the works came directly from the artists’ studios; today, they hang in highly regarded collections across the world. Some were destroyed, others are missing. What were the conditions that led to that exhibition? Who selected the artists? Why were female artists not among them? And what has remained of modernism’s promises for a better life?
This publication brings together historical images, reviews of the time, and the provenance of the artworks. It also analyses the historical context of the Kunstmuseum Luzern. The facsimile of the exhibition catalogue designed by Jan Tschichold conveys the visionary graphic design of 1935: Tschichold established new means of expression that continue to inspire today.
