About this Item
Romance, adventure novel of the Napoleonic era was made into a movie in 1936 starring Fredric March and Olivia de Havilland. A historic novel that covers Europe and America from the troubled days preceding the French Revolution through the Napoleonic period and the readjustments following the Louisiana Purchase in America. William Hervey Allen Jr. (1889?1949) was an American educator, poet, and author. He is best known for his work Anthony Adverse (made into a 1936 movie of the same name), regarded by many critics "as the model and precursor of the contemporary American historical novel." Frederick R. Rinehart formed a publishing house, Farrar & Rinehart, in partnership with John C. Farrar and Stanley M. Rinehart, Jr., his brother. In 1946, after Mr. Farrar's departure for the new house of Farrar & Straus, the firm became Rinehart & Company. Rinehart & Company was the successor to Farrar & Rinehart, Inc. The latter was renamed Rinehart & Company in 1946 following the departure of John C. Farrar. The brothers Stanley M. Rinehart, Jr. and Frederick R. Rinehart continued to operate the company until its merger with Henry Holt and Company and the John C. Winston Company in 1960, to form Holt, Rinehart and Winston (HRW). This means this copy was printed between 1946 and 1960, beyond wartime restrictions and at least 10 years after release of the movie. Also before ISBNs. Hardcover has tan cloth boards with black and brown lettering and designs on front & spine, but no DJ. Top page-edge tinted gold. Interior is tight, clean and unmarked. Minor handling damage. Top spine cloth torn stabilized with tape. Rear and midle pages hastily shut causing dog-earred page, which have been folded back to original configuration. Not the N.C. Wyeth edition. Ink illustrations by Allan McNab. Copyright 1933. Printed in U.S.A. All three volumes in one binding. No Edition nor print-run info found. Estimate 1950 printing, see above. No ISBN, LCCN nor MSR.
