London, James Burns, 1841, first edition; 8vo, 112 x 175mm; pp xi, 150 followed by 16pp publisher's catalogue; salmon pink impressed decorated cloth, spine with title and author gilt; title in red and black, two wood engrved plates of curches; corners bent and a little worn but clean and firm internally and generally in a good or better state. . . . . . Paget was an ordained priest in the Church of England and latterly for a decade Bishop of Oxford. This work is fictional and didactic, hanging the need, as Paget saw it, to keep church buildings repaired and generally in good condition whether to avoid their collapse of to minimise costs escalating through deterioration. The church named here, St Antholin's, is perhaps modelled on the mediaeval church St Antholin, Budge Row in the City of London. This was built in around 1119 and initially known as St Anthony's being dedicated to Saint Anthony the Great. It was destroyed in the Great Fire of London, 1666,and rebuilt to Christopher Wren's design during 1678-84 and eventually demolished in 1874.…
