Spanning over 40 years in business this is my story, how two normal kids built the largest independent baby nursery equipment business in the UK from nothing.
My autobiography has been described as ‘a true love story’, which I suppose it is, but I didn’t write it for that reason. Some say ‘it’s a brilliant business book full of successful proven ideas’, but I didn’t write it for that reason either. Others have said ‘that my philosophy should be taught in schools and be compulsory reading in universities’. Nor did I write it for that reason.
There are those readers that have struggled when my story jumps forward and then backwards. Having dyslexia and ADHD you will understand after reading the first page how my mind works, you’ll see immediately that these personality behaviours encouraged me and gave me the drive to succeed, it proves that you do not have to regard yourself or let others regard you as a failure.
You will find out that you can be humble in business, have empathy, make lots of money without exploitation, but I didn’t write it for those people.
The real reason for writing the book was to firstly recognise what my wife, Marilyn, has achieved in business but secondly to help me, at the time I was going through a personality breakdown. With having been responsible for our business from day one suddenly there was nothing inside when we sold, a silence in my head along with screaming that I just couldn’t explain.
You see I was out, I was no longer needed. I wasn’t wanted, my words, my wisdom, my influence, my knowledge, my focus, my determination, my lateral thinking, my decision making was no longer top of the agenda. Every minute of my life had been swapped for £70 Million pounds.
2 years following the sale of Kiddicare I watched this incredible business that we had built turn into turmoil and chaos, rapidly expanding yet disintegrating at the same time. I would have happily given back the money in exchange for my old life.
So, the only way for me to get through this pain was to put our lives into words bringing you into our world.
I hope I will make you laugh, you may shed a little tear or two, but most importantly I hope you will gain a different perspective on your life, your business and those of others.
