This fourth edition foundational reader guides beginners through West-Saxon dialect and early English texts with clear, practical aids. Enhanced notes, a complete glossary, and a dedicated outline of grammar help students connect language form to literary meaning, making complex ideas accessible without sacrificing scholarly depth. The selections span religious and historic writing, showing how early English prose and poetry developed, and they are paired with context to support independent study in class or at home. This edition emphasizes gradual, structured learning. It explains linguistic concepts alongside each text, notes variations across manuscripts, and points readers toward key reference works to deepen understanding. Containing illustrative passages, instructional prefaces, and a full glossary, it supports readers as they move from grammar basics to reading full excerpts of Anglo-Saxon literature. A clean very presentable copy that belonged to my father when he was a student at Western Reserve College in Cleveland, OH in the 1920s-1930s. …
