"The Anglican Episcopate and the American Colonies" is a comprehensive historical analysis investigating the complex religious and political controversy surrounding the proposed establishment of an American bishopric. Arthur Lyon Cross meticulously examines the administrative challenges faced by the Church of England in governing its colonial parishes from London and the intense opposition this sparked among colonial Dissenters and political leaders.

The work explores how the movement for an American episcopate became intertwined with the broader tensions regarding British authority and colonial autonomy. By drawing on extensive primary sources, including ecclesiastical records and political pamphlets, the author demonstrates how religious disputes contributed to the ideological foundation of the American Revolution. This study provides vital insight into the intersection of church and state in the eighteenth century, highlighting the role of ecclesiastical policy in shaping the socio-political climate of the early United States. "The Anglican Episcopate and the American Colonies" remains a significant resource for scholars of colonial history, religious studies, and the development of the Episcopal Church in America.
