It is June 1897. A year has passed since Dr. Laszlo Kreizler, a pioneer in forensic psychiatry, tracked down the brutal serial killer John Beecham with the help of a team of trusted companions and a revolutionary application of the principles of his discipline. Kreizler and his friends - high-living crime reporter John Schuyler Moore; indomitable, derringer-toting Sara Howard; the brilliant (and bickering) detective brothers Marcus and Lucius Isaacson; powerful and compassionate Cyrus Montrose; and Stevie Taggert, the boy Kreizler saved from a life of street crime - have returned to their former pursuits and tried to forget the horror of the Beecham case. But when the distraught wife of a Spanish diplomat begs Sara's aid, the team reunites to help find her kidnapped infant daughter. It is a case fraught with danger, since Spain and the United States are on the verge of war. Their investigation leads the team to a shocking suspect: a woman who appears to the world to be a heroic nurse and a loving mother, but who may in reality be a ruthless murderer of children.

Paperback. Condition: Used. In a world where the term "angel" is often used to describe a particularly well-behaved child or an overzealous pet, Caleb Carr boldly redefines the concept in his 1998 opus, "The Angel of Darkness." Set against the backdrop of a late 19th-century New York City that seems perpetually shrouded in murky fog and the scent of suspiciously rotting vegetables, this novel is a delightful mix of gothic intrigue and psychological machination, designed to make you reconsider your weekend plans?namely, whether to take that stroll through a dimly lit alley or to stay safely ensconced in your well-lit living room with a cup of tea. Prepare yourself for a narrative that pirouettes between the realms of crime and the ethereal. You?ll find detectives and deductions aplenty, all wrapped up in a plot so intricate that you might begin to wonder if Carr had a secret career in origami. The characters are as layered as an overcooked lasagna, with each twist and turn unveiling yet another noodle of deceit. You might even find yourself rooting for the villain?though, like a decent cup of tea, it?s all about the right blend, isn?t it? As you meander through the pages of "The Angel of Darkness," you?ll encounter a variety of figures that make you rethink your social circle. From the brooding investigator whose emotional baggage is so heavy you half expect him to charge for excess luggage, to the enigmatically seductive woman who likely has dark secrets hidden under her extravagant hat, the cast is a veritable pantheon of personalities that leap off the page but may just trip over each other in their haste to be noticed. The novel is split into sections that read like a series of unfortunate events, each one more thrilling than the last?if only because you?re left wondering how on earth these characters will manage to dig themselves out of the plot holes they?ve created. With a narrative style that could make even a Victorian novelist nod in approval, Carr serves up a cocktail of suspense that is strangely reminiscent of the odd taste of a fruitcake: it may not be to everyone?s liking, but it certainly sticks around longer than anticipated. As a bonus, you may find yourself pondering the philosophical implications of crime and morality while simultaneously chuckling at the absurdity of the grit and grime woven throughout New York?s underbelly. Is there an angel in this darkness? Or is it merely the glow of a streetlamp flickering in the fog? Only you, dear reader, can unravel this conundrum?unless, of course, you choose to consult a local oracle who specializes in Victorian literature. Condition: Used, and perhaps a little worse for wear?just like the city it depicts. Expect the pages to have that delightful crinkle that suggests someone may have spilled tea on them, and the cover is sporting a few battle scars from its time on the shelf of another unsuspecting reader. This book has seen some action; it may even have absorbed a few secrets of its own. Join the ranks of those who have braved the pages of "The Angel of Darkness," and come away with more questions than answers. Will you emerge enlightened, or merely confused? That, my friend, is entirely up to you. Crappy Old Books is here to provide you with this literary experience, one slightly battered copy at a time. Don?t let it slip through your fingers like so many lost opportunities?grab your chance at literary exploration today! Seller Inventory # 1322
