The procedure is on the schedule. But do you know exactly what it will demand from anesthesia?
A procedure name alone does not reveal when airway access may become restricted, ventilation requirements will change, bleeding risk may increase, or postoperative care will require closer observation. Effective anesthesia planning begins with understanding the operation, not simply selecting anesthetic drugs.
Anesthesia Plans by Procedure bridges that gap with a structured, visual approach to anesthetic preparation and perioperative management. Covering 50 adult noncardiac operations and procedures, this manual connects surgical stages with their implications for patient assessment, airway strategy, physiologic management, equipment preparation, and recovery.
Rather than organizing information around isolated drugs or medical conditions, the book follows the actual progression of surgery, helping readers recognize what matters before, during, and after each procedure.
WHAT YOU WILL FIND INSIDE
- 50 Procedure-Specific Anesthesia Plans: Explore operations across abdominal, colorectal, bariatric, orthopedic, spine, urologic, gynecologic, breast, ENT, neurosurgical, thoracic, and vascular specialties, as well as endoscopy and nonoperating-room procedures.
- A Consistent Six-Part Planning Framework: Each procedure follows an organized structure covering the Operation Map, Preoperative Questions, Room Setup, Operative Timeline, Emergence and Recovery, and Variants and References.
- Visual Operation Maps and Clinical Diagrams: Understand operative sequences, patient positioning, equipment relationships, restricted airway access, and important physiologic transitions through educational illustrations and planning tables.
- Expanded Coverage of Complex Operations: Examine anesthesia considerations for selected demanding procedures, including ERCP, pancreaticoduodenectomy, robotic prostatectomy, awake craniotomy, thoracic lung resection, and major aortic surgery.
- Practical Planning and Reference Tools: Use patient-modifier discussions, intraoperative reassessment frameworks, a reusable procedure-plan worksheet, specialty-based procedure listings, and clinical-risk indexes to support focused preparation.
DESIGNED FOR ANESTHESIA LEARNERS AND CLINICIANS
This manual is intended for anesthesiology residents, nurse anesthetists, anesthesia trainees, and perioperative healthcare professionals seeking a structured educational reference for surgical case preparation, clinical discussion, and review.
Whether preparing for an unfamiliar operation or revisiting the anesthesia implications of a familiar procedure, readers can follow a consistent approach that connects the surgical plan with the anticipated anesthetic demands.
Understand the operation. Anticipate the critical stages. Build a more informed anesthesia plan.
