Anecdotes of Music, Historical and Biographical; in a Series of Letters from a Gentleman to His Daughter (1814) by Allatson Burgh is a three-volume work that provides a conversational history of music through personal letters. Volume 2, which is what we have here, specifically focuses on the development of music from the late medieval period through the 17th century, emphasizing the evolution of various musical styles and the lives of early masters. It details the lives and works of pivotal composers such as Palestrina (identifying his birth around 1529), Orlando Gibbons, and Handel. The volume is filled with stories ranging from musical performances at St. Dunstana?Ts Tavern to the ravishi.
