Near contemporary brown 3/4 leather over boards, gilt decorated compartments, brown leather labels, Marbled endpapers, Joints have light rubbing, frontispiece offset to title page and is a little strained in the bottom right gutter. A very good copy, handsomely bound. Frontispiece based on the famous engraved title page to the 1628 edition, here redrawn and engraved "expressly for this edition" by C. Freeman. A handsomely bound copy of Burton's great book, first published in 1621. "The Anatomy, as its publishing history shows, was one of the most popular books of the seventeenth century. All the learning of the age as well as its humour - and its pedantry - are there. It has something in common with Brant's Ship of Fools, Erasmus's Praise of Folly, and More's Utopia, with Rabelais and Montaigne and like all these it exercised a considerable influence on the thought of the time. Dr Johnson deeply admired it, and Charles Lamb's often and strongly expressed devotion served to rescue the Anatomy from a brief period of oblivion" (PMM 120).
