Synopsis:

Analytical Mechanics of Space Systems, Fourth Edition iterates on an already mature text by expanding some developments and discussions, as well as by including new content from spacecraft dynamics research over the last decade. It provides comprehensive treatment of dynamics of space systems, starting with the fundamentals and covering topics from basic kinematics and dynamics to more advanced celestial mechanics. Taking a tutorial approach, the text guides the reader through the various derivations and proofs to explain the principles underlying the equations at issue, and shows how to apply them to various dynamical systems. Part I covers analytical treatment of basic dynamic principles through advanced energy concepts, including use of rotating reference frames that often occur in aerospace systems. Part II covers basic celestial mechanics, treating the two-body problem, restricted three-body problem, gravity field modeling, perturbation methods, spacecraft formation flying, and orbit transfers. MATLAB, Mathematica, Python, and C-Code toolboxes are provided for rigid body kinematics routines and basic orbital 2-body orbital mechanics routines.

About the Authors: Hanspeter Schaub is Professor, Aerospace Engineering Sciences at the University of Colorado and holds the Glenn L. Murphy Chair. His research interests include orbital mechanics, relative motion dynamics, attitude dynamics and control, nonlinear dynamics, charged astrodynamics, high performance astrodynamics software development, and space debris mitigation. He has received the University of Colorado Dean's Teaching Award, the provost's faculty achievement award, the outstanding faculty mentor award, and was named to the College of Engineering top 20 faculty in research. AIAA awarded him the John Leland Atwood Award for excellence in teaching and the Mechanics and Control Flight Award for excellence in research. He is an Associate Fellow of AIAA and a Fellow of the American Astronautical Society. He is a graduate of Texas A&M University from which he received the Department of Aerospace Engineering Sciences Faculty Distinguished Performance Award.

John L. Junkins holds the rank of University Distinguished Professor and is Founding Director of the Hagler Institute for Advanced Study at Texas A&M University and holder of the Royce E. Wisenbaker Chair. Over the past four decades, he has made numerous contributions to guidance, navigation, and control of space vehicles and has several inventions in optical sensing. He has over 400 publications including seven books. His work has supported over a dozen space missions. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering, the National Academy of Inventors, and an Honorary Fellow of AIAA. He is the recipient of over a dozen international honors, including the AIAA Theodore von Karman Award, the AIAA Mechanics and Control of Flight Award, the AIAA GNC Award, the AIAA Aerospace Literature Award, the AAS Dirk Brouwer Award, the Frank Malina Medal by the International Academy of Astronautics, and the Tycho Brahe Award by the Institute of Navigation.
